Details of Disappearance
Amber was last seen in Etobicoke, Ontario Canada on November 26th 1988. She had stayed out all night to party with friends and didn’t return home. Her mother, Christine “Chris” Jaffary, and her stepfather, Don Pressey, were both told she had crashed at the south Etobicoke motel for the night. They both went to the motel a little after noon and picked her up so they could take her back home.
She returned to the family’s home on Rabbit Lane but soon after arriving home she took off again. Both Don and Christina chased after Amber and urged her to return home. They ran after her to Lake Shore Boulevard West where Amber flagged down a passing motorist and got into the vehicle. The car drove away before her parents could catch up with her. This was the last time she was seen.
Some reports also state she was having dinner with her mother and spoke of plans to meet up with a friend. Amber apparently had plans to meet a friend, Michelle, at a doughnut shop on Jarvis and Gerrard Streets but she never arrived.
Amber has a history of running away and most missing children agencies classify her as an endangered runaway. However, there has been no trace of Amber since 1988 and she didn’t take any belongings with her when she left.
Serial killer and convicted rapist, Paul Bernardo, has been considered as a possible suspect in Amber’s disappearance. He was active at the time as he was known to have committed multiple rapes in the Scarborough, Ontario area between 1987 and 1990, being dubbed the “Scarborough Rapist.” It was later discovered that Bernardo along with his wife, Karla Homolka, killed three teenage girls in the early 1990s in Ontario.
Paul was convicted of two of the murders and was sentenced to life in prison. It’s unclear if he was involved in Amber’s case but investigators believe he had more victims. Don Pressey says he believes she was likely a victim of his and has said it’s believed he had many more victims who haven’t been found yet. He suspects Amber is probably one of them. This has not been proven.
Ambers mother passed away from lung cancer in 2010 without ever learning her fate. Amber’s birth father, Bob Potts, passed away in 2014. Don is still alive and continues to seek answers in his stepdaughter’s disappearance. Amber’s case remains unsolved.
