Details of Disappearance
Howard Newell was last seen in Yarmouth, Canada on January 22nd 1955. He was last seen walking home from a wood lot where his family was cutting firewood at the time.
He vanished while on the way home and was never seen or heard from again. Searches were immediately commenced following his disappearance. They searched the bush alms and swampy areas in the wooded area that Newell was using as a short cut to get home but no trace of him was ever found. Authorities initially concluded that Howard had drowned and his body was carried out to sea. His body was never recovered and searchers did search waterways for any trace of him.
There have been many theories on his case. It’s been suggested that Howard may have been hit by a vehicle and the driver panicked and hid his body to avoid trouble. His father never gave up hope of finding the boy. Howard’s case remains unsolved. In 2010, his family held a mass memorial for him and had a memorial stone for Howard placed in Melbourne Cemetery. He has never been located.
