Details of Disappearance
Michael was last seen in Rosemead, California on August 6th 1981. He left the home he lived in with his grandparents at 6:00 pm to go for a ride with a friend. The friend later stated that he dropped Michael off at his home but he never arrived home. Askren never returned home. He vanished just two days after his seventeenth birthday.
Michael has never been seen or heard from again. It was initially suspected that he had run away from home but investigators have long since discounted this possibility. Authorities have stated that Askren is missing under suspicious circumstances and believe he was the victim of a homicide.
At the time of his disappearance, Michael was staying with his grandparents since his parents were separated. Michael’s mother, Laurlynn Irvin and nine year old brother, Ronald lived in an apartment five miles away from where he was living at the time. He was a student at Rosemead High School.
Askren left behind all of his clothing that he purchased for the upcoming school year and all his other personal belongings were also left at home. The only thing he had with him was $30 in cash. His case remains unsolved. Foul play is suspected.
